Trade Deadline day summary

The Flames, like the Bruins (though much more surprisingly), have definitively declared that they are making a run for it. They moved a lot to pick up Olli Jokinen, including a first-round pick, and also made some other moves for "now" guys.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Sabres and the Ducks punted on the season, with the Sabres first picking up a nondescript goalie (specifically Tellqvist) and Dominic Moore, then eventually giving up Ales Kotalik for a 2nd-round pick, and the Ducks pretty much playing the part of a yard sale on moving day.

Meanwhile, the Leafs were managed with all the success of Michael Steele on mescaline, opening negotiations by picking up Martin "remember me?" Gerber, then giving us Antropov for picks, late in the game giving Buffalo Dominic Moore for a pick, and finally closing by trading Tampa Richard Petiot for 2 defensemen, a pick, and Olie this-time-it's-the-Goalie. Olaf Kolzig AND Martin Gerber in the same day? Congratulations, Leafs GM Brian Burke - you just made Garth Snow look reasonable.

That's probably it for trade coverage. I'll spend tonight weeping for Prucha into my framboise, then tomorrow I'll deal with what on earth we might do with our forward lines.
