Look who's wrong about something again! Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit's fatso!!!!
Why would you even consider complaining about this? How is this a good idea? Who comes down on the side of concussions? Don't suspend offenders because having too many suspensions is bad for the sport. Holy shit, who feels the need to go to the media in the preseason and speak out against suspending headhunters? He likens it to the fucking foot in the crease rule?
Ho

Shit
One of these things is not like the other
One of these things ends people's careers
Can you tell which one is not like the other

Top Five Things I Like Today
5. When I woke up yesterday morning, my girlfriend said to me, "sorry about the shootout [from the previous night]." My reaction was, "meh, we played a good game, so did they, it ended in a tie. Then we played the weird skills competition game and they earned themselves a free Bettman Point. Teams do that all the time - we've got five Bettman Points so far on the season ourselves. Whatever. Why should a 7-round shootout affect how I feel about a hockey game?" She then revealed to me that her father, who attended the game, heroically Walked The Fuck Out after overtime, and did not stick around for the shootout. Awesome.
Those aren't the #5 Thing I Like Today, they're the lead-up. The Thing in question is that we have a coach who basically feels the same way, and is willing to say it. Asked about why we went first instead of our usual second, Torts explained that we'd be going back in the future: "[Lundqvist] talked to me, he feels more comfortable making the first save. It's kind of his show in that silly skills competition we do, so... I have to listen to him."
Silly skills competition, indeed.
4. I know it's a Penguin doing it, but still: this.
3. The title of this video on YouTube is not the point. I watched it without sound. The point is just two guys, chilling and watching a basketball game.
2. Torts again! Comes out and says "I agree that Staal shouldn't be suspended, he sucker-punched a guy but it wasn't a huge deal, it wasn't dirty, intent-to-injure-type stuff" (I paraphrase here, of course). Then calls the league to ask why no one penalized Orpik for shouldering Avery in the head - not saying it was dirty, just that it really should have been penalized. The obvious implication: "you would have called a penalty if this were anyone but Avery, and if the situation were reversed, it would have been a suspension." Here's Brooks's take.
1. The long-awaited return of Vinny Prospal to the lineup tonight. That is so fucking cool. I hope he's good again. Also, despite his return, Staal will keep the A, which is bonus-awesome. Clearly, Newbury sits. Looks like the first line will be Prospal-Stepan-Gaborik? That's a pretty good line. I'd bitch a little about that obviously meaning Avery will end up on the fourth with Drury, except as we learned 2 nights ago, they're more guidelines than they are lines, and everyone will skate with everyone else.
Bonus: Fuck you, fatty! Spend the second half of April fucking your sister-in-law or whatever, you won't be playing hockey!

Don't do what I said
Don't click down there. Click here instead. This is better. This is much better. 'Cause this is the Devils' broadcast. This shows two things the other video doesn't. You get to see the absolute tantrum Marty throws, including smashing his stick against the boards. He is a child. Also, you get to hear the whole thing announced by Chico Resch. You get to watch him complain about some goalie interference non-call, even showing the clip, over and over again, of Marty being bumped a full foot in front of the crease, while Chico complains about how Marty is clearly still in the crease. You even get to hear him commend Marty for the stick-throwing tantrum! This whole thing is so priceless, I'm linking you to it twice. If you were a Devil fan (*shudder*), how embarrassed would you be?? This is Devils' hockey.

Ouch
Wanna do what I've been doing for the last 15 minutes?
1. Go here.
2. Click the blue video camera icon about halfway down, over on the left, where it says (in classic gray-on-black) "Jussi Jokinen GOAL on Martin Brodeur."
3. Watch.
4. Click "Replay."
5. Go to step 3.
It cannot be fun to be a Devil fan right now.
I know, I know, I'm supposed to be worried about our series, but that wasn't gonna change tonight no matter what. And...man, is that a good way to end a hockey game.

More thoughts on the Devils
So, without diving too deeply into the playoff picture, I want to establish that the Devils will definitely finish either 2nd or 3rd (probably 2nd, 'cause I imagine they will make up that point on the inconsistent Caps). We will end up anywhere between 4th and 9th, no one says we're even making the playoffs, but playing even odds puts us probably somewhere around 6th or 7th. This means it is entirely possible (though not necessarily the surest bet) that we will end up playing the Devils in the first round. I don't want to count on anything, from our perspective, but I want to throw a hypothetical situation out there - let's say we DO end up making the playoffs, and we draw the Devils.
What does Brent Sutter do?
Let me clarify: in Martin Brodeur, the New Jersey Devils have the winningest regular season goaltender in NHL history. They have the man most responsible for the Devils winning any cups at all, let alone 3, and they might have the player most responsible for them even still having a franchise in New Jersey at all. Look, I hate Martin Brodeur significantly more than the next guy, but there's no denying that he is one of the best to ever play the game (although there is plenty of denying that he is the best ever, mostly using math - if someone wants to start paying me a salary to write this blog, maybe I'll find the time to write up the entry that does so). The point is, he's obviously got to be the starting goalie for the Devils in every possible situation - how could he not be?
Well. Hmm. In the 2007-2008 regular season, the Devils played the Rangers 8 times. The Rangers won the first 7, then lost the last game of the season (which did not affect the standings at all), in a shootout. Then they played us in the first round of the playoffs, which we won in 5 games, dropping only game 3, in overtime. This season, they played us 6 times (take a note, Bettman: this is strictly worse than playing us 8 times. I don't care about seeing Evgeni Nabokov any more than people in Los Angeles care about seeing Sidney Crosby. Schedule this better). Brodeur played the first two and the final one, all of which we won. During the other 3, he was out with an injury, and Clemmensen played all 3. The Devils won all 3.
So, obviously, Sutter starts Brodeur. Realistically speaking, there's nothing else he could, will, or should do. But - if it happens - you can't tell me Sutter and Marty won't be more than a little nervous about the situation.
